News from around your district 20-06-08

Stories from the villages of Bawtry, Misterton and Misson for the week ending 20th June 2008.

BAWTRY

Library future undecided:

The future of Bawtry Library as a community support centre for the town is still in the balance despite rumours that it was to close as part of a cost cutting exercise by Doncaster Borough Council.

It had also been announced that the library would close on Saturdays and that the summer play scheme for children would be axed, although that is paid for by Bawtry Town Council.

Bawtry mayor Coun George Spencer has attempted to force the issue but Doncaster council has responded by saying that although the support centre is underused the measures are still under consideration.

Whist winners:

Dorothy Taylor, Maureen Cory and organiser Elsie Foote filled the first three places in the Ladies Section at last week's Bawtry Whist Club meeting in the New Hall at Bawtry. Hugh Mulligan, Rob Breacher and Alma Beresford took the Gents Section prizes. The low score awards went to Eve Harrison and Rita Breacher. Raffle prizes were won by Gladys Dewsnap, Margaret Byard and Joe Foote.

Handyman still sought:

Bawtry Town Council is still seeking to replace the Bawtry town centre street cleaner after the retirement of Mr R Mavin, who had done the job for the past 17 years.

Anyone interested in taking over the role, which could be enlarged to include odd jobs around the town as well as keeping the Market Place tidy, has until 24th June to apply to the clerk to the council Mrs Jenny Worthington.

MISTERTON

Councillors surgery:

District councillor Ray Simpson will hold a surgery at The Misterton Centre, on Tuesday 1st July from 10.30am to 12 noon.

Village gala:

Misterton Village Gala will be held on Saturday 5th July and this year children from Misterton Primary School will be taking part in the annual art competition, which is part of the gala.

Other children in the village can also take part by picking up an entry form from The Misterton Centre. All entries in the art competition will be on display at the gala.

Another feature of this year's gala will be a tug-of-war competition and teams can enter on the day at the Misterton Old School Field.

Flood Fair:

Residents of Misterton, especially those affected by last summer's floods, are invited to a Flood Fair in the village hall, Sturton le Steeple, on Saturday 12th July at 11am.

Organisations and bodies with statutory responsibilities and powers in relation to flooding, flood defences and flood prevention will be present.

This is an opportunity for residents to voice their concerns, receive advice, and take up ongoing concerns with the people responsible for the Misterton area.

MISSON

Footpath:

Misson Parish Council is to submit an application to Notts County Council for a footpath between Newington and Austerfield to become a public right of way.

Despite objections from nearby property owners the parish councillors decided to submit the application after more than 20 people submitted evidence that they had used the footpath over a number of years both on foot and on horseback.
