Stories from the villages of Bawtry, Mattersey, Tickhill and Misterton for the week ending 18th July 2008.

BAWTRY

More shops for Bawtry:

Detailed plans have been submitted for the development of a supermarket on the site of Bawtry Motor Auctions. The supermarket will have car parking for more than 60 cars and will include a petrol station at the site of the present petrol pumps.

Outline planning permission has already been granted and the present application adds details.

Included in the plans is a development of retail units along Scot Lane, which borders the present site.

The present Bawtry Motor Auction owners Leonard Tomlinson Ltd have submitted the plans and there is no indication as to the ultimate owners of the supermarket.

Bawtry Town Council considered the plans at its meeting last week. Leonard Tomlinson Ltd has obtained planning permission for a new site at Bellmoor Great North Road, Retford.

MATTERSEY

Police promise action on speeders:

Local beat manager Pc Paul Pilsworth has acknowledged that vehicles speeding through rural villages is still a concern for residents and has promised firm action to clamp down on offenders.

Pc Pilsworth said: "Speeding is still an issue and needs work doing on it. It is a problem that occurs in all villages and is initially dealt with by Speedwatch, which does have an effect, but there will be follow-up action by the police to catch those persistent offenders."

Under the Speedwatch scheme local residents use speed guns to identify vehicles exceeding the 30 mph speed limit and letters are then sent out to owners of those vehicles by the police.

Where a problem is shown to continue police officers will accompany the Speedwatch volunteers and have the power to issue Fixed Penalty Tickets to offenders.

Pc Pilsworth also has the use of an off road motor cycle which will be used to catch youths riding motor cycles in a manner likely to cause distress and alarm to local people. The police have the power to seize the vehicles used.

Mattersey Parish Council is to push ahead in their bid to have inter active speed signs erected in the village. Although Notts County Council have stipulated that there must be at least 15 per cent of 400 vehicles travelling in one direction exceeding 36 mph before signs will be considered, Mattersey Parish Council chairman Coun Gordon Brown said he believed that discriminated against rural communities and the council has invited County Councillor Ken Bullivant to meet them to discuss the matter.

Council to help youth:

Mattersey Parish Council was so impressed with a plea from local youths to provide them with leisure facilities that councillors have agreed to investigate ways of providing a BMX track and a youth shelter.

The council will approach Bassetlaw Council, which owns land at Mattersey Thorpe, to suggest that land would be suitable for a cycle track and to discuss the possibility of getting the Youth Bus to visit Mattersey.

The Council has also intimated that it would provide a small amount of funding to start the process of providing a Teen Shelter.
