EVERTON

Local farmer to grow eco crop

Everton farmer Richard Troop has found a way to beat the floods and hopefully in a way which will reduce them in years to come.

Successive years of heavy rain and a policy of allowing rivers to flood have made land next to the River Idle which Mr Troop rents from Everton Parish Council almost impossible to farm but he has come up with the ideal crop.

With environmentalists calling for alternatives to fossil fuels Mr Troop wants to grow willow on his land which he will supply to power stations for generation of electricity and to Notts schools for heating.

Mr Troop says that if the River Idle was dredged it would be possible to grow other crops and whilst he does not think that is likely to happen, land which is used for growing willow could be returned to arable use within a year.

Everton Parish Council has given Mr Troop its backing by allowing the crop to be grown on the land.

Speedwatch not for Everton

Everton Parish Council has given up hope of promoting Speedwatch in the Everton area after hearing that the only insurance available to volunteers would have to come from the parish council.

Their insurance only covers those working under the direct supervision of the council and councillors believe that any scheme set up in Everton would be organised by the police and not by the parish council.

No parish councillor is amongst the volunteers for the scheme and the parish clerk advised councillors that the volunteers would not be under council supervision.

Affordable housing project moves ahead

Responding to pleas from villagers who have found themselves and their families priced out of the housing market, Everton Parish Council assisted by Notts Rural Community Council undertook a survey and further studies into providing affordable housing in Everton.

With the first part of the work completed, Everton Parish Council Chairman and the Parish Clerk will meet with representatives of ACIS the housing provider and Notts Rural Community Council to prepare a report to Bassetlaw Council.

It is hoped that the report will persuade Bassetlaw Council that an affordable housing scheme is a viable and worthwhile proposition in Everton.

Speed cameras are working

Notts Police have reassured Everton Parish Councillors that the time over distance speed cameras which were installed along the A631 between Gringley and Scaftworth are working.

Councillors had queried the operation of the cameras following doubts about their effectiveness, but the Police issued 842 speeding notices to drivers of vehicles which were caught speeding by the cameras in the 12 months to the end of October last year.

In addition to those there were also a number of drivers issued with tickets after being caught speeding by mobile Police cameras. Mobile cameras are used mainly to target motorcycles which may not get captured by the fixed cameras.

MATTERSEY

Police issue crime prevention advice

A crime spree in the village of Mattersey which has seen the rate of crime more than double in a month has prompted police to issue crime prevention advice to householders as Spring and the gardening season approaches.

Householders are warned to be vigilant and make sure that sheds, garden and play equipment are secure. Sheds should be fitted with quality locks and windows are whitewashed or fitted with net curtains. Large items of garden equipment should be chained together and cycles and lawnmowers should be post coded police said.

Path warden wanted

Mattersey Parish Council has decided to join Notts County Council's Parish Paths Partnership and has issued an appeal for a Parish Paths Warden.

Under the Scheme the County Council will provide funding for public footpaths in the area to be improved and maintained.

The parish council has to conduct a survey of the paths to determine what work is required and is looking for a volunteer to carry out that task.

The warden would subsequently keep an eye on the state of the footpaths and report back to the parish council in order that work can be carried out.

Anyone who wishes to be considered for the post should contact the clerk to the parish council Peter Baines on 01427 848411.

Village spring clean

The annual litter pick in and around Mattersey will take place on Sunday 20th April at 10am.

Bags and gloves will be provided by the Parish Council and volunteers are welcome to join in. Further details can be obtained from Parish Councillor Lesley Hunt on 01777 817692.

TICKHILL

Tickhill Flower Club

The next meeting of the Club will take place at Tickhill Parish Room on Wednesday 27th February at 7.30pm.

Stephen Hickman will give a talk on Planting up a Spring Basket.

Everyone is invited to join Tickhill and District Footpath Group in their weekly walk which on Sunday 17th February will be at Cusworth.

Anyone who wishes to go along should meet leader Tony Robinson at the rear of Range (Ex B&Q) on York Road, Cusworth.

Charity evening

Two local charities will share the proceeds of An Evening with Gervase Phinn the author and broadcaster which will take place at St Mary's School on Monday 3rd March at 7.30pm.

Tickets are 10 and be purchased at Fenton's Butchers or Juicey Fruits in Tickhill.

MISTERTON

New face at Misterton Centre

Following the resignation of The Misterton Centre's first receptionist, Misterton Parish Council has appointed Pauline Dickinson to the post.

She is already in situ and so the opening hours are back to normal from Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 2pm.

Sponsor a bin

Misterton Parish Council plans to install additional litter bins at Misterton Sports Field and is offering local businesses the chance to sponsor them.

Any company which wishes to so will have its company name permanently displayed.

If anyone is interested further information can be obtained from the Clerk to the Parish Council, David Wright at The Misterton Centre on 01427 891659.

Gravelholes Lane closure

Gravelholes Lane in Misterton is closed to allow for road works. Notts County Council is resurfacing the road, which will be closed until midnight on Friday 7th March.

An alternative route will be via the B1403, Gringley Road, Church Street, High Street, Wharf Road and Grove Wood Road.

WEST STOCKWITH

Keep the Home Fires Burning

An appeal has gone out this week for West Stockwith folk to rally round to keep the Village Hall heated.

The present boiler requires replacing and it will cost around 2,000 to do so.

Chairman of West Stockwith Parish Council Auriol Bird said: "Our boiler is very much on its last legs so we are endeavoring to raise the 2,000 necessary to replace it. Without the Village Hall there is nowhere for people of the village to meet and socialise and without heating the hall would have to close."

A series of events is planned In order to raise funds starting with a prize bingo evening on 28th February starting at 7.30pm.

There will be a murder mystery evening on 21st March produced professionally by "It All Adds Up" from Retford.

Tickets cost 5 and are payable at the door to include pie and peas.

All the money raised from West Stockwith Film club nights will also go towards the boiler fund as well and Coun Bird has urged more people join up for the showings.
