BAWTRY
Town council chase parking charges
Severn Trent Water is refusing to pay 585 to Bawtry Town Council for using the Bawtry Market Hill pay and display car park during work on water mains under the car park.
The company has instead offered to pay 200 for loss of profit as the bays are not used all day for parking. The town council has rejected that sum and asked the company to pay within 28 days or interest charges will be added.
The town council has emphasised that the work on the car park was carried out without consultation or authorisation prior to work commencing.
More licensed premises for Bawtry
It appears that Bawtry has an infinite capacity for alcohol with yet another planning application to change a shop at 50 High Street, Bawtry into a wine bar.
The town already has several wine bars, pubs and licensed restaurants and with opposition growing to the amount of alcohol available for sale in town centres throughout England, Bawtry Town Council has added its voice to that concern and objected to the plans because it considers that there are more than sufficient drinking establishments currently operating in Bawtry.
The council also feels that the safety of users of a nearby bus stop and pedestrians would be compromised by vehicles parking on the forecourt of the premises.
Bawtry Whist Club
Winners at last week's meeting of Bawtry Whist Club at Bawtry New Hall were Dorah Littlewood, Margaret Byard and Brenda Osborne for the Ladies with Julie Hogg taking the low score award. For the Gents Ellis Nottingham, Eve Harrison and Brian Wilkinson came out on top leaving Dennis Mellow to pick up the low score prize. Dorah Littlewood capped a good night by taking home a raffle prize along with Geoff Brown and Ellen Scott.
MISTERTON
Patience pays for parish council
More than five years of legal wrangles and negotiations over a small plot of common land at the former Packet Inn at Misterton have finally paid off for Misterton Parish Council and its parishioners.
The land stands between a building plot, on which a number of houses have been partially built by Andromeda Trading of Sheffield, and Station Road in Misterton – the only access to the site – and has now been sold to rival company Wykeham Estates of Doncaster for the sum of 106,500.
Clerk to Misterton Council, David Wright said: "Misterton Parish Council had an offer of 5,000 from Andromeda Trading15 months ago and has finally made the sale to Wykeham Estates and got rid of the problems associated with the common land.
It is not quite the end of the matter because Andromeda is still challenging the council's ownership of the land and claiming that the statutory declaration was incorrect but we have acted on counsel's advice throughout."
The sale was made subject to covenants protecting public access to the canal towpath and preserving parking rights on the land.
Councillor Hazel Brand, chairman of Misterton Parish Council, said: "The only other offer made for the land was 57,000, which the parish council rejected.
The decision to sell the common land wasn't taken lightly, but faced with the potentially huge costs of litigation, the parish council acted on counsel's advice and sold.
The background to this matter is lengthy and complicated, but the clerk to the council will be pleased to explain it to anyone interested if they call at The Misterton Centre."
The sale will significantly improve the parish council's finances, although there are costs to be deducted from the sum and the net capital receipt may only be used to finance capital spending.
New opening times at Misterton Centre
