Stories from the villages of Bawtry, Misterton and Gringley for the week ending 8th August 2008.
BAWTRY
Council raises more objections to supermarket:
Two weeks after raising numerous concerns about the proposed supermarket to be erected on land now occupied by Bawtry Motor Auctions, Bawtry Town Council has added to its objections after councillor Jean Cox, whose daughter has a retail food business in the town, asked councillors to revisit the planning application.
The council has now submitted a further length list of comments about lack of details of how the supermarket will be serviced for deliveries and waste collection, lack of trolley parks, no designated pedestrian routes at the supermarket and further comments about the roundabout at the junction of High Street, Doncaster Road and Station Road, which is to be the access to the supermarket.
The council has expressed concerns about safety as the proposed roundabout is near a bend and asked for a traffic impact survey. Councillors have already commented that the supermarket would prove to be detrimental to existing Bawtry businesses, but town mayor Coun George Spencer said: "We have heard nothing from Bawtry businesses and I hope they don't leave it too late.
I would have thought they would have had something to say about something as important as this which is a major development in Bawtry as they did when the car park was proposed."
Support for junior cricket club:
Bawtry Town Council has voiced its support for Bawtry Junior Cricket Club, which provides coaching a competitive cricket for up to 50 boys and girls.
Councillors agreed to make a donation of 150 to club funds.
Neighbourhood Watch:
The new chairman of The Bawtry Tree Estate and Martin Lane Neighbourhood Watch is Terry Dye, who succeeds Bernard Turland.
Mr. Turland who has been chairman for many years said: "I am pleased that we have a new chairman and wish to thank all those who gave their willing co-operation during my years as chairman."
Peter Kirby was elected as treasurer and takes over from Dudley Fletcher, who announced that the May plant sale made a profit of 350.
Members decided to make donations to help the youth of the town and awards of 120 were made to the scouts and to BARS, which provides recreational facilities in Bawtry and 60 to the Bawtry Junior Cricket Club.
Whist winners:
Julie Hogg, Betty McHugh and Helen Scott were last week's Ladies Section winners at Bawtry Whist Club but Christine Merrick did not share their good fortune and took the low score award. Bob Breacher, Bill Hollinshead and Ellis Nottingham were the Gents winners with Hugh Mulligan taking the low score award.
Raffle prize winners were Elsie Keeble, Paul Butler and Dorothy Taylor.
Library summer activities:
The children's activities at Bawtry Library, which have been in doubt due to cuts made by Doncaster Borough Council, are to go ahead thanks to a donation of 200 made by Bawtry Town Council.
There will be two sessions on Friday 8th August at 10am and on Wednesday 27th August at 2.30pm and all children are invited.
Use it or lose it:
Bawtry Town Council has issued a warning to all allotment holders that unless plots are worked they must be forfeited.
Councillors heard that various excuses have been given including one that the dog was poorly, but have decided that the policy will be rigidly enforced.
There is a waiting list for the allotments including from people who do not live in the town.
MISTERTON
Family Fun Day:
There will be a Family Fun Day organised by Ladybirds Playgroup at Misterton Methodist Church Hall on Monday 25th August between 2-4pm
Police issue car crime advice:
The majority of the 11 crimes in Misterton, which were reported to police during July, were theft of or from vehicles and local beat manager Pc Chris Gregson is keen to offer security advice to car owners.
He can be contacted via The Misterton Centre. Young people had been enquiring about building a BMX track on the sports field, but their access to the Old School site had been restricted because of ongoing vandalism and crime.
Local man elected to council:
Wayne Flower, who is Misterton born and bred, was unanimously co-opted to Misterton Parish Council to fill a vacancy created by the resignation of Ralph Rimington.
Mr. Flower, who lives in Newells Terrace in the village, is 24 years old and is a member of a motorcycle charity group RIDERS, which provides aid to Africa.
He will take up his seat at the September meeting of the Council.
GRINGLEY
Council to get tough on speeders:
Gringley Parish Council will ask police to visit Middlebridge Lane in the village in an effort to cut the speed of vehicles using the road. Several near miss incidents have been reported and a domestic pet, a cat, has been killed.
Councillors have also expressed an interest in joining Speedwatch after hearing of the success of the scheme in nearby Mattersey.
Best Kept Village:
Previous winners Gringley could not match up to its previous standard in this year's Best Kept Village competition failing to make the final judging.
In common with its neighbour, Everton, competition judges found that untidy gardens had a detrimental effect. Judges also noted that notices in the village were out of date.
Emergency plan may be ditched:
Gringley's emergency plan, which outlines the village's immediate response to emergency situations pending the arrival of professional services, could be abandoned unless 20 volunteers are found.
There has been a good response from residents who are willing to put equipment at the disposal of the emergency services, but only two volunteers have been found to undertake the job of contacting vulnerable sections of the community.
Now parish councillors are to make one last effort to recruit the volunteers and will make a decision on the fate of the plan in September.
Council chairman Coun Hugo Dunkley, speaking of the plan, said: "It's sensible and it needs to happen but it wants some support. Hopefully it will never be used but we will have something in an emergency."
