Stories from the villages of Bawtry, Misterton and West Stockwith for the week ending 7th November 2008
BAWTRY
Improvements to town entrance
Bawtry's district councillors have agreed that some of the cash which is allocated for their use could be used to spruce up the approach to Bawtry along South Parade from the direction of Retford.
The present grass verge is the responsibility of the borough council but is not cut because of safety concerns and this has left the area looking untidy.
Now the borough council's neighbourhood manager is to look into the various options, including paving the area and report back to the town council.
Allotments re-allocated
Three of the Bawtry town council allotments which were not being worked to the council's satisfaction have been taken from the current tenants and re-allocated to persons on the waiting list.
There is still a demand for the allotments and the town council has stated that any other allotments which are not worked will be similarly re-allocated.
Whist winners
Ladies dominated proceedings at Bawtry Whist Club's meeting last Thursday evening taking five out of the six winners places.
In the ladies section Gladys Dewsnap, Helen Scott and Dorothy Taylor were the winners with Rita Breacher, Alma Beresford and the sole gent Geoff Brown successful for the gents side.
Dorah Littlewood and Hugh Mulligan took the low score awards. The gents fared a little better in the raffle with Bill Hollinshead and Joe Foote sharing the prizes with Vi Brown.
Toilets may re-open
It would appear that the only chance of the public toilets in Bawtry coming back in to use is on a pay as you go basis.
The cost of providing turnstiles for the public conveniences in Bawtry has been put at 16,000 and Doncaster Council officers have hinted that there may be cash in the capital budget to carry out the work. Discussions are currently under way and a decision is likely this month.
Bawtry Town Council has supported the re-opening of the toilets after receiving representations from businesses and the public in Bawtry and have been seeking help from local businesses with the running costs.
MISTERTON
Councillor volunteers to save lives
Misterton parish councillor Sarah Harwood-Gray has become a fully qualified life saver after completing her training as a community first responder.
First responders are local volunteers who work in partnership with East Midlands Ambulance Service and respond to life threatening emergency medical calls and provide vital assistance prior to the arrival of the ambulance service.
Such assistance may be oxygen therapy, mask resuscitation and heart defibrillation as well as providing basic first aid.
The first responders are trained to use the life saving defibrillator and often early intervention can make a significant difference to survival of heart attack.
Coun Harwood-Gray now joins the Five Villages First Responder's team covering Misterton, Walkeringham, Beckingham, Gringley and West Stockwith. Anyone can volunteer and further information can be obtained from the local co-ordinator Martyn Johnson on 01427 892649.
Police Surgery:
Notts Police will be at the Misterton Centre on Saturday 8th November between 10am and 12 noon to respond to any complaints or queries from local residents.
Parish council meeting:
The next meeting of Misterton Parish Council will be on Tuesday 11th November in Misterton Church Room at 7.30pm.
Members of the public are invited to attend and may ask questions of or give information to the Council.
Misterton landmark disappears
Demolition of the former village hall at Misterton, which fell into disrepair through lack of use and was sold earlier this year, has begun.
The village hall, which dates back to the 19th century and was originally a Temperance Hall, was at one time the centre of village activity, but increasing safety requirements and the lack of car parking space meant that apart from parish council meetings the hall was rarely used.
Misterton Parish Council, as sole trustee of the Misterton Community Trust, set up to take over the running of the village hall and the nearby derelict Victoria Institute in 2003, obtained planning permission for residential development and recently completed the sale of the hall for the sum of 39,000.
Costs incurred by the parish council in administering the village hall and Victoria institute since 2003 amount to 26,000 and after deducting that from the sale figure the trust now has 13,000 for investment in future village projects.
Most Improved Premises awards
The awards for Misterton Parish Council's Most Improved Premises competition were made at the meeting of Misterton Parish Council on Tuesday 14th October.
The winners were Alan and Maggie Scott, of Mayfield Barn, High Street, who beat off competition from Elizabeth Hinchcliffe (Bella Fiore) and Jane Kilpatrick (Misterton Library), who were both awarded certificates of merit.
Each of the projects was very different in scope, but parish councillors thought that the Scott's refurbishment and renovations warranted the top prize.
Council seeks funds for new social club
Misterton could shortly lose its social club if an application by Langley Homes to build eight houses on the site is successful and Misterton Parish Council are seeking a payment from the developers in order to provide new club premises in the village.
Councillors considering the planning application at their last meeting heard that a similar, recently-approved planning application by Langley Homes in Retford, had had a Section 106 agreement imposed, requiring various contributions and works, including a payment of 100,000 to mitigate the loss of employment land.
The council agreed that it providing a new club/community building is vital and a Section 106 agreement to require such provision is essential and will ask planners to consider imposing such a requirement.
WEST STOCKWITH
Halloween party a success
Everyone joined in last Saturday to make West Stockwith's Halloween Party a roaring success.
Everyone turned up in fancy dress and with toddlers joining in there were plenty of little devils as well as ghosts who all joined in the fun and games.
Pumpkins arrived by the barrow load for the pumpkin competition and with prizes provided by Wendy and Dave Seddon no-one went home empty handed.
Linroyale Potatoes donated the jacket spuds and the White Hart Inn provided the butter pats to complete an enjoyable evenings entertainment which raised 181 towards the cost of keeping West Stockwith village hall operational.
Parish Council chairman Auriol Bird said: "I would like to thank everyone who supported the party. They all entered into the spirit of things to make it a big success."
Table Top Sale
The next event at West Stockwith village hall will be a table top sale on Saturday 8th November at 10am.
Anyone wanting to book a table should contact Pearl.
