Poster for Beards flour mill

editorial image

This week’s picture shows the Dukeries Flour Mill in Worksop.

It was sent in by reader Mrs M Eden, of Worksop, but there is no date on it.

She believes the mill was close to the site of the Millstone pub, on Newcastle Avenue.

The photo is part of a poster for Beards (Millers) Ltd.

It boasts: “This country flour mill produces Beards English wheat flour and wheatmeal used in the manufacture of high quality biscuits.”

“Samples and prices from Beards (Millers) Ltd.”

The address was simply Dukeries Flour Mill, Worksop, Notts, and the phone number was 2801-2802.

Do you recognise the mill or know where it was? Or did you work there?

Get in touch and let us know your memories.

The early flour mills harnessed the power of the River Ryton to grind the grain.

A Joseph Beard was known to have a water mill, the dam of which became a bit of a social centre for the town.

In the winter when it was frozen over, skaters used it, and during the rest of the year it was used for fishing.

Elephants from a visiting cicus were even know to wallow in it, and there was a demonstration of a lifeboat launch.
