Muscle car fans get excited – Ford have unveiled a new Mustang-shaped tie-up with long-term tuning partners Shelby.

But possibly not too exicted.

There are a few restrictions here, you see. It’s for the track only, and it’ll probably never get out of the USA. It’s built to compete in TransAm and other racing series Stateside.

Under the, ahem, hood is a Ford Performance 5.2-litre V8 although as yet we don’t know how ponies it will produce. However, the Mustang is based in part on the Shelby GT350R, which has a similar engine, and that makes 526bhp. This Shelby FP350S Mustang will doubtless make a bit more.

The car is ready to race, so it’s compliant with US and FIA regulations straight out of the box. You get a six-point roll cage, an unrestricted exhaust, and toughened up Tremec manual transmission. The body gets custom body panels, including a Ford Performance splitter and adjustable wing on the rear.

There are no prices yet but, for us here in the UK, that’s probably not such an issue. But if you live in the USA you will able to buy one of these racing Mustangs through your normal Ford dealership. Which just doesn’t seem fair somehow.
