After the fun and games of the FA Cup, the games against Loughborough and Carlton were always going to be anti-climactic.
The three nil win against Loughborough did not flatter Retford, but the 2-1 defeat against Carlton was hard to swallow.

Not least because we were robbed by suspect officiating.

Remember Maradona's "hand of goal"? Think of their winning goal as a down market version of that, in many different ways.

No-one likes losing, especially in a top of the table game like that. But to lose so unfairly was really hard to stomach.

The reaction of players and fans alike showed as much. That the Carlton players celebrated so un-gallantly after the final whistle only stoked the fires of righteous indignation across Cannon Park.

There is talk on the forums of hope for the club to improve their PR efforts, not only in getting new fans on board, but also in looking after those who already have the bug.

Until such time as there are suitable covered standing areas at both ends of the ground, I can't help but think that the vociferous support that The Badgers management are so keen to see, and hear, will be unduly muted.

No one except the strangely unbalanced wants to stand and shout in the middle of a field. Least of all when sodden through, and the wind is blowing into the very core of your being. Build it, and they shall come, as someone once said.

But more than this, the club need to look long and hard at the way it markets itself within the town.

A new marketing executive has been taken on board, and I hope she earns her commission, not only in getting sponsors to put money into the club, but also by getting them to back the club around town.

Walk through the high street on a match day Saturday, and how many stores are displaying information about the clubs fixtures?

How many are proud to openly nail their (black and white) colours to the mast and start to engender the civic pride the team deserves?

It's all very well 900+ people coming through the gates for the big games. It is the lesser games where the club earns it's bread and butter.

And it is these games that the town need to get behind. So why not start by showing your support this Tuesday night in the re-arranged game against Newcastle Blue Star?
